Description
Looking for a Black woman (aged 40+) with experience in devising and/or comedy acting.
Nine Sixteenths is a show about the author's personal connection to Janet Jackson which uses multiple forms of theatre including lipsync, monologue and physical comedy.
There is some movement and choreography in the piece so we are also looking for someone who is comfortable learning choreography but by no means do we need a trained dancer.
We're looking for a collaborator as well as an actor and ideally has a connection to Janet Jackson.
Audition Info
As this is collaborative piece we would love to ask for two self tapes, described below:
-
The first extract is in response to Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction at the 2006 Superbowl Halftime Show:
"Do you think she planned it? Do you think it was a stunt? Do you think she did it so people would talk about it? She probably planned it didn't she? Do you think they were going to do something else and it went wrong? How could it go wrong? There had to be a rehearsal? A costume just falls apart? So embarrassing.. Have you seen the pictures? Do you think she planned it though? I mean come on the nipple piercing ? The way she looks - soo posed. She totally planned it." -
We would love to hear you speak briefly about your connection to Janet Jackson, if any. It does not have to be long, below is an example of one extract in the script.
"I also grew up in a village. I always call it “the only black in the village experience” , in the english rural countryside, and unfortunately I feel like I slightly missed out on the first wave of Janet. I was very into American hip-hop… but then Janet Jackson.. kind of like the second wave… you know that busta rhymes video? And I was like wow! She's amazing and I very much connected to her as being a kind of mature woman, and I would say she sort of disappeared from my awareness, until I watched her um in films, you know, Poetic justice and then in that… I mean I hate Tyler perry … ok hate is a bit strong, but, anyway in this film of his I saw, She was brilliant in it! So.. she came back into my psyche as an actress I was really inspired by."
